![]() A group of girls study the Koran - the sacred text for Muslims - at the Islamic Centre at Brent. Catalogue Reference: (MOL) HG3010/21 | My first day at the Islamic centre, which was in Leeds on Spencer Place, was a very nerve racking time. Firstly, my siblings and I would travel there on bus, which nearly always meant trouble. It was not unusual to get racist bus drivers on and we would then sometimes face a challenge to avoid getting 'beaten up' before we got to the Islamic centre, by the rough neighbourhood kids. So you can imagine my great joy, when our tutor informed us that all the children must remeber to bring money with them the following week, as we were all going to the feast. I was over the moon, I could not hold in my excitment the rest of the day. The following week armed with my money, and sensible shoes, and clean knickers 'incase i was knocked over by a bus and needed to go to hospital', I made my way to the Islamic centre. I was horrified to realise that the 'feast money' was actually the fees money; to be more precise, the fee for the class.
