Yiddish-English Manual |
| Description: |
Hardback book; English language and grammar manual for Yiddish-speaking immigrants (1901) - Yiddish-English manual produced for recent Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe whose mother tongue was Yiddish. It contains everyday English words and phrases and sample social and business letters which would have been useful to them. All these are transliterated from English into Yiddish. Of particular interest are those relating to the common trades and occupations followed by Jewish immigrants in the East End such as tailoring and furniture-making and those relating to travel to America. The manual was commissioned by the English Evening Classes Committee in connection with the Russo-Jewish Committee for Relief of Jewish Refugees. The Russo-Jewish Committee (as it is commonly called) was set up in London in 1882 to deal with the large-scale influx of immigrants after the outbreak of pogroms in Russia in 1881. |
