from 'The Alien Immigrant' by Major W Evans Gordon, published 1903 - The route taken by Major William Evans-Gordon in his fact finding tour of Eastern Europe and the Baltic. Journeying from St Petersburg to Cracow, he visited and photographed the major towns of Jewish settlement, and recorded many of the industrial activities. Evans-Gordon was engaged in the cause of limiting alien, and especially Jewish, immigration to Britain, calling on Parliament to set up a Royal Commission, which culminated in the Aliens Act of 1905. |
