| Description: |
Enamelled metal sign for Russian Vapour Baths, Brick Lane - Enamelled metal wall sign for the Russian Vapour Baths in Brick Lane, probably pre-First World War. The Baths were run by Benjamin Schewzik and were simply known as 'Schewzik's'. Such vapour baths had been brought over by immigrants from Russia and were a part of social and religious life. The men's baths were the most used and Friday evening was the busiest time when men would go there from their workshops before going to synagogue for Friday night prayers. |
