The British Union of Fascists planned march into Cable Street, in the heart of the East End, was met with massive counter demonstrations so great that the narrow thoroughfares about Aldgate were completely impassable. Shops were closed and many boarded. 300,000 people gathered at Leman Street, Gardiners Corner and Aldgate until it was clear the march had been called off and the Fascists diverted along the Embankment. |
