Docklands

Catalogue Reference:(MOL) IN35055

Dockers unloading goods in a photograph dated between 1950 and 1961. The docks provided work for many Irish immigrants but the introduction of containerisation in the 1960s, where goods were transported in containers, meant a big reduction in the number of workers needed in the docks. By 1973 there were only 12,000 registered dock workers compared to 32,000 in 1955.
