Silk

Catalogue Reference:(LMA) SC/PHL/02/930/1265

Two women, shadowy figures behind their looms, are seen in this silk-weaving workshop in Alma Road, Spitalfields, east London in 1909. Silk weaving has a long history in the area: an estimated 50,000 people worked in the industry in the 18th century in workshops run by Huguenots (refugees from France).
