New Year

Catalogue Reference:(JML) 1993.59

A card for the Jewish New Year in 1920 shows a woman lighting the Sabbath candles watched by her two daughters and her husband. Women have a highly significant role in Jewish religious rituals carried out in the home. The Jewish Sabbath - a day of rest different from all other weekdays - begins every Friday at sunset and continues for the next 24 hours. The celebration of Sabbath starts with the family gathering for a special meal and continues the following day with a communal religious service.
