| Waisted (JML) 1990.157.10 One of the daughters of the timber-merchant Arnold Barmaper is shown in this 1880 photograph. She wears a tightly fitting dress or jacket and skirt, with a nipped-in waist - a shape only achieved by wearing a corset. Corsets - boned undergarments threaded with laces that could be tightened to give a woman an unnaturally small waist - were essential items in every woman's wardrobe at this date. |
White tie (JML) 1985.25.39 This is thought to be a photograph of Philp Kandler taken around 1905. The young man is wearing the white waistcoat, high collar and tie, which was formal wear for men at this date at evening social functions. White neckties could be notoriously difficult to knot correctly - a starched (stiffened) tie could lose its crisp look very easily. |
