| School log (HCA) TED/2/54 A page from the Hull Hebrew School log book for 1940 describing how the school was closed during air-raids during World War Two. Aerial bombardment of civilian populations during war began during World War One, first occurring in Britain with night raids by Zeppelins (hydrogen-filled airships) in 1915. Although inflicting comparatively little damage these early raids had a big psychological impact on civilians. |
Rebuilding (HCA) 1953/BLMisc/1004 A 1953 architect's drawing for the reconstruction of the synagogue in Osborne Street, Hull, after the building was hit during a bombing raid in World War Two. The strategy behind bombing campaigns against civilians was to destroy morale and help to bring about defeat, a theory devised in part by the Italian General Giulio Douhet in 1930. |
