A page from the Newcastle Chronicle which appeared on 30 October 1914 appealing to Irish men to volunteer for the newly formed Tyneside Irish Battalion. For most front-line soldiers much of their time was spent in trenches, where besides the danger from the enemy, they were plagued by lice and often had to endure wet and muddy conditions.
