A 1979 photograph of the memorial for those who died in World War One in Brompton Oratory in London. The majority of the names appearing here are Irish. The Latin words above translate as "It is sweet and fitting to die for one's native land". This sentiment disappeared in the terrible death toll of what was called 'The Great War' where an estimated nine million men worldwide died while on military or naval service between 1914 and 1918. The majority of those killed were under the age of 30.
