Women picking tea on a plantation in Assam in 1945. Tea grown here was part of the supply for British forces in India. The weary face of the woman in the foreground of the picture combined with the stance of the two men standing behind - one the foreman and the other the owner of the plantation - give this picture a slightly threatening mood. Indeed, at one point during the war, this area was under threat when the Japanese invaded Manipur and threatened to cut off land commuications with India.
