He is wearing a life jacket, and is holding an oxygen mask and his flying gloves. Most air battles took place at altitudes in excess of 15,000 feet (c. 5000 metres) and oxygen and thermal protection were vital. |

Dance Band (IWM) E31201 The dance band of the 1st Battalion of the Caribbean Regiment photographed in action in 1945. This picture was taken while the Battalion was waiting to return from Egypt to the West Indies. The Caribbean Regiment was raised from volunteers in military units across the West Indies and served in many theatres of war overseas. The Caribbean itself provided important naval bases for allied forces.
