A 1940 photograph of the Muslim League at Lahore, Pakistan with Muhammad Ali Jinnah (front row centre). Born in 1876, Jinnah studied in England and after returning to India worked as a lawyer in the Bombay (Mumbai) High Court. By the late 1930s he had become leader of the Muslim League which adopted the 'Lahore Resolution' calling for separate states in the majority Muslim area of northeastern and eastern India.
