| Estate (RGS) S0001822 A farm estate at Cedar Hill, St Madeleine, Trinidad photographed in the period between 1930 and 1950 with a row of carts lined up at the edge of a road. Oil had been discovered in Trinidad in 1857 and by 1924 oil exports exceeded the agricultural exports of sugar and cocoa combined leading to a decline in agriculture. |
Boulevard (RGS) S0001811 Looking down a broad street in Port of Spain, Trinidad at the beginning of the 20th century. Port of Spain had been been destroyed in a fire in 1808 - supposedly started when a German immigrant with a candle fell asleep while in his wooden water closet - and when the capital was rebuilt, it was laid out to include paved streets, walks and gardens. |
