This picture is one of a series taken for the Central Office of Information in London in 1950 entitled "Sugar in the West Indies". These are described as new houses on the Diamond sugar plantation which were being built to replace the old slave-type houses which held ten families.

Looking down a broad street in Port of Spain, Trinidad at the beginning of the 20th century. Port of Spain had been been destroyed in a fire in 1808 - supposedly started when a German immigrant with a candle fell asleep while in his wooden water closet - and when the capital was rebuilt, it was laid out to include paved streets, walks and gardens.
