Spanish Town

Catalogue Reference:(RGS) S0001544

A woman walks past the imposing entrance of the King's House, Spanish Town, formerly the official residence of the governor of Jamaica, in about 1908. The original name of Spanish Town was 'Villa de la Vega' - the town on the plain - but it was renamed by the English after their defeat of the Spanish in 1655. Kingston was made the capital of Jamaica in 1872 and Spanish Town declined in importance.
