Port Royal

Catalogue Reference:(RGS) S0001659

A view over Port Royal, Jamaica in 1891 looking towards Fort Henderson. In the 17th century Port Royal was a large and economically significant English settlement, the trading centre of the Caribbean dealing in slaves, sugar and raw materials. In June 1692 a devastating earthquake occurred killing an estimated 2000 people. In 1722 a hurricane and two further earthquakes ravaged the town again and it never regained its former importance.
