A photograph dated 1937 showing the old fortifications at Diu in Gujarat which date from the 16th century. Diu, formerly a colonial possession of Portugal, is a small island lying off the west coast of India. It was only in 1962 that India forcibly took over control of Diu from the Portuguese. Once a trading outpost, Diu is now a popular holiday destination.
