A rabbi - the word comes from the Hebrew for 'teacher' - stands in front of the Ark, or special cupboard, at the front of a London synagogue where the scrolls of the Law are stored. Each of scrolls is covered with a mantle and has a decorative top or 'rimmonim'. Scrolls are often given as acts of piety or in commemoration by members of the synagogue. The one held by the rabbi has a special dedication on the mantle. This photograph was taken probably in the 1970s.
