A row of cots with their (mostly) sleeping occupants at the creche or nursery of the Spring Mills, in Mumbai (Bombay), India is shown in this 1944 photograph by Cecil Beaton. Mumbai was the centre of India's cotton industry and the mills there were the main employers. The creche provided care for the young children of women working in the mills.
