East End

Catalogue Reference:(JML) 77.4

Three Jewish butchers are photographed outside their shop in Stepney, east London in 1903, together with a small crowd of people which presumably includes some of their customers. Two of the men are wearing long striped aprons and one of them is carrying a knife. Joints of meat hang in the window behind them. Although this is a grainy photograph taken from a book entitled The Alien Immigrant it gives a very good sense of life at the time.
