A page from an English-language manual for Yiddish-speaking immigrants to London dated 1901. Yiddish is a language which originated in the Jewish communities of eastern Europe as a blend of German dialects together with words borrowed from Hebrew and other languages. The manual was commissioned to help the large number of immigrants to London in the early 1880s. It contains everyday words and phrases as well as sections relating to trades followed by the Jewish community including tailoring and furniture-making.
