Catalogue Reference:(PRO) INF 14/437/002

Boys in a village school in India in 1944. The literacy rate in India was only 6% at the end of the 19th century. By 1941 it had grown to 15%. Literacy is still an issue in India today, especially in rural areas, but nevertheless educational standards are very high. One result of this is that in the late 20th century some British science publishers opted to have textbooks set by typesetters in India because of the excellent quality of the work and the competitive pricing.
