The two small children sitting on the kerb in the left foreground of this 1927 photograph are dwarfed by the imposing proportions of the Dockhead Roman Catholic School in Bermondsey, on the south bank of the Thames. Bermondsey was a busy industrial area with the docks providing work but living conditions for many in the area were very grim with a consequent impact on health. In the same year that this photograph was taken a 'palace of baths' was opened providing baths, a laundry and a swimming pool for local residents.
