Carnival (WYAS) WYL5041/2/3/19 A photograph taken at the 1994 Leeds Carnival. The word 'carnival' comes from two Latin words meaning 'farewell to meat'. It originates from the Christian practice of not eating meat or dairy products during Lent (the 40-day period before the festival of Easter) and so the custom arose of having a feast just before the start of Lent. Nowadays carnival has come to mean a celebration of music, dance and fun. |
