A group of men reading in the common, or prayer room, of the Jews' Temporary Shelter in London before the First World War. The Shelter gave refuge to many Jewish migrants to England. The curtain on the left of the picture covers the recess where the Torah scrolls (the books of the Jewish law) were housed.
