Volcanic dust

Catalogue Reference:(RGS) S0001847

A street in Georgetown, on the Caribbean island of St Vincent, in 1902. The photograph shows the devastation caused by the violent eruption of the volcano Soufriere when 1600 people were killed. The street lies thick in volcanic dust and almost every window pane visible in the picture is shattered. There were further eruptions in the 1970s: people were evacuated and there was no loss of life.
