Dancing (JML) 1060.17 A photograph taken in a Jewish club for working girls in the east end of London at the beginning of the 20th century. Further education was the privilege of a small minority and most working-class young people left school at 14 (the age had been raised in 1902) and went straight to work. Working hours were long so opportunities for enjoyment and relaxation were very welcome. |
