A service at the beginning of Yom Kippur - the Day of Atonement and the holiest day in the Jewish year - taking place in the Philpot Street Great Synagogue in east London in 1922. The rabbi (the leader of the synagogue) and the cantor (who leads the singing) are dressed in white in the centre of the picture. All the men present in the congregation are wearing the prayer shawl or tallit.
