A blue and white enamelled sign dating from about 1900 for the Russian Vapour Baths in Brick Lane, Spitalfields, east London. Important for the Jewish community, vapour or steam baths offered bathing facilities at a time when most working-class homes lacked bathrooms of any sort. The baths burned down in 1940.

A pre-1945 painting by Lady Rose Henriques entitled La Toilette showing women washing in their backyards in east London. Many houses still lacked bathrooms in the mid-20th century. Together with her husband, Rose Henriques founded the St George's Jewish Settlement - a social and educational club for Jewish young people.
