An 1879 illustration from the magazine Vanity Fair of Sir Albert Abdallah David Sassoon. Sir Albert was from a Jewish family who had long been established as merchants in Baghdad, Iraq. Sir Albert both made and inherited a fortune and first visited England in 1856. Some years later he returned to live in Kensington in London. He had a reputation as a generous man and endowed many charities.
