It all began with Julius Reuter, a German-born immigrant to England, pictured in this 1872 illustration from the magazine Vanity Fair. Reuter had worked in the telegraph office of the Prussian government where he saw the benefit of transmitting information speedily by telegraph. After a telegraphic cable was laid between England and France, he opened an office in the City of London in 1851 transmitting stock market quotations between London and Paris. The business was a success and expanded to include general and economic news worldwide.
