Pale of Settlement MapsFrom about 1500 to 1900 two-thirds of all the world's Jews lived in the Nobles' Commonwealth of Poland and Lithuania. However, from 1772 onwards this large kingdom was partitioned between the Russian, Prussian and Austro-Hungarian Empires. The boundaries were not fixed until 1815, but from then on they stayed static until 1914. These borders are too complicated to explain in words.
