Romania

Moldavia and Wallachia, formerly under Ottoman Turkish rule, united to form Romania in 1859. The kingdom of Romania formed in 1881. Transylvania and Bukovina, parts of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire, became part of Romania after the First World War.


Record Keeping

Transylvania and Bukovina (former Austrian regions): Vital records have been kept by the clergy since the late 18th century, with full compliance after 1848. Civil registration began in 1895.

Wallachia and Moldavia (former Ottoman regions): Civil vital registration, in Romanian, began in 1865.
