Hungary was a kingdom, part of Austro-Hungarian Empire from 1867 until the First World War. Modern Hungary is much smaller now than it was before the end of the First World War in 1918. The former kingdom of Hungary included some areas now in Slovakia, Ukraine, Romania, Croatia, Serbia and Austria.

Starting in 1851, each religious community was required to keep vital records for the government. Civil registration began in 1895.
