* Militia

County militias - local auxiliary defence forces - were recruited systematically in Ireland between 1793 and 1816 and intermittently up to 1876. Every able-bodied man in a county was liable to serve, at least theoretically, and muster rolls (the official lists of officers and men in militia units) and pay lists are available at the *The National Archives in the record series (PRO) WO13/2574-3370. Organised by county, and then chronologically, the musters give names, ranks, dates of service, and may have enrolling and discharge information, while the pay lists record rate of pay, the amount paid and, occasionally, supplementary details.

The information supplied is bare, but given the scarcity of Irish sources for the early 19th century, the militia lists should be much better known. Records of the Yeomanry, part-time and voluntary, are also available county by county from 1823 to 1834.
