Apart from research carried out in the General Register Offices in Dublin and Belfast, there are a number of other ways to access parts of the records, as suggested below.

The Family History Library of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (the Mormons or LDS)
Microfilm copies of the following are available (copies of the microfilms can be ordered via the Family History Centre attached to any Mormon temple):

Indexes

  • Births 1864-1958
  • Marriages 1845-1958
  • Deaths 1864-1958
Registers

  • Births 1864-81, 1900-13, 1930-32 (part), 1939
  • Marriages 1845, 1847-48, 1850-54, 1856-57, 1859, 1864-70
  • Deaths 1864-70
The first three years of birth registers, 1864-66, have been copied or transcribed as part of the LDS International Genealogical Index and, as such, are searchable online at the *www.familysearch.org.

In addition, the second edition of the LDS CD-ROM, British Isles Vital Records Index (2002) includes a database copy of the birth registers from 1864 to 1875 inclusive. This is not a full copy of the originals, omitting in particular the place of residence, but is still an extremely useful resource.

Local Heritage Centres
Many of the local heritage centres, part of the Irish Genealogical Project, have database transcripts of the local District Registrar's records for their area, or at least part of it. These records are not directly accessible and are only used as part of a commissioned research report. Counties covered are:

  • Armagh
  • Clare
  • Derry
  • Fermanagh
  • Galway
  • Leitrim
  • Limerick
  • Mayo
  • Tipperary North
  • Tyrone

Other Sources

  • For parts of Cork and Kerry, Albert Casey's monumental O'Kief, Coshe Mang (14 volumes, 1962-69) contains indexed transcripts of the local registrar's records.
  • Various partial transcripts are appearing online. An up-to-date list can be found at * scripts.ireland.com/ancestor/browse/links/counties.
