All naval officers are listed in the Navy List, and it is possible to trace promotions and ships served on from these lists. There are service records for men from 1840 to the 1920s, although there are some retrospective entries back to 1756. These records will give you:
An interesting source for the 18th and 19th centuries are the passing certificates that were issued to prove qualifications of officers. They give service and some personal details.
