* Internment

During the two world wars citizens of enemy countries were interned, partly for their own protection but mainly because of the supposed threat they posed to the war effort. Few records for the First World War survive, though several incomplete lists of internees can be found in the National Archives record series (PRO) HO45 and (PRO) HO144. Fortunately, for the period of the Second World War (PRO) HO396 contains microfilm copies of cards on individual enemy aliens, including those who were not interned. A small sample of files for men and women who were interned are in (PRO) HO214.
