Common Pitfalls

Events can be registered up to six weeks after they took place. If your birth was in late March - look in the April-June register as well.
Spelling of surnames can vary, so look for variants, that is, Heyward, Hayward, Heywood, Ayward, etc.
First names can also vary. Somebody registered with a certain forename may never have been called it.
If you can't find the event, look in registers for previous and subsequent quarters and years.
If you know where the event took place you might try looking at local parish registers to see whether there was a christening, wedding or funeral recorded.
