There are two types of web sites that you pay to use the information:

  • Those for which you pay a regular subscription to use all the databases and other material
  • Those where the indexes are free, but you pay to download the complete description or an image of a document.
The most comprehensive subscription site is ancestry.com at *www.ancestry.co.uk, which has hundreds of databases and other resources, mainly for Americans, but an increasing amount of British information. They often run special offers, either offering free access for a short period or a reduced subscription.

Origins.net run several sites where you pay to use specific information. They include English origins at *www.englishorigins.com, which contains material from the Society of Genealogists and Scottish Origins at *www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk, which has records of the General Register Office of Scotland.

*GenesConnected is a subscription service that provides general advice on research and useful mechanisms for sharing your results and communicating with other subscribers worldwide.
