* General Introductions to Family History

There are many useful introductions. One of the best is:

  • Simon Fowler, The Joys of Family History (PRO, 2001). A short introduction to the subject.
  • Mark Herber's Ancestral Trails (Sutton Publishing, 1997). One of the most comprehensive guides available.
Two other useful books are:

  • The Genealogical Services Directory (published annually and which contains thousands of useful addresses and articles on all aspects of family history).
  • Pauline Saul Family Historian's Enquire Within (6th edition, FFHS, 2003), which has hundreds of short introductions to records and other aspects of genealogy.
It can sometimes be difficult to get hold of these books, but the National Archives, Family Records Centre and Society of Genealogists all have excellent bookshops and will take orders by telephone and via the internet. Outside London it can be more difficult to buy the books mentioned, however, many local family history societies have bookstalls at their meetings and many towns now have an annual family history fair with many people selling books. Amazon.co.uk is a convenient and reliable internet site.
