The registers were not set up to record information on slave owners but information in the registers can be used for genealogical purposes:
- Location of absent owners
- Indication if the owner is deceased; if the owner died between registrations then the date can be approximated and church burial registers and tombstones checked for further information
- Bequests of slaves to family members, often with the relationship
- Inherited slaves from family member, often with relationship
- Slaves were given to family members and the relationship is often given
- On marriage slaves were often given to the newly weds - the term 'in right of marriage to' is often used. Also, the wife's slaves were usually transferred to the husband on marriage and the gift of a large number of slaves from a single woman may indicate a marriage
- Minors could not register slaves in their own right and the register will indicate if the owner is a minor and name the legal guardian, who could be a parent or another relative
