* Slaves

Owner
Name
This can be a single name or multiple names including possible surnames. Slaves that had been baptised may have the slave name and Christian name. If the slaves were baptised the church baptismal registers may give further information.
Age
Often this was approximate, especially for African or foreign-born slaves
Colour
Usually black or coloured (or Mulatto) some colonies used other terms to denote degrees of 'whiteness'
Country of Birth
Sometimes for African born slaves this column may include ethnic group
Occupation
Remarks
This column was usually used to show reasons for increase or decrease, sometimes it included tattoos and 'tribal' markings, and on occasion especially for St Lucia or Trinidad, it may give familial relationships with others in the return
It is not always possible to know family relationships but clues may be given in the registers, for example a purchase or sale of a woman and children may indict mother and her children. If the owner died his will may record relationships between slaves. If the slave was freed by manumission the manumission register may indicate a relationship between the owner and the slave, or if an adult and children were manumitted at the same time it is possible that they were related.
