* Entry Books and Registers of Out-Letters

These volumes record letters sent from the Colonial Office to governors, British and colonial departments and to individuals.

Entry books start in the 17th century and run until 1872 when they are replaced by series of Registers of out-letters. These record in full copies of letters sent out, however enclosures tend to be summarised. They also contain instructions and commissions to governors and other senior colonial officials, petitions, reports, letters and patents for grants of land.

Registers of out-letters run between 1872 and 1926 and contain brief descriptions of letters sent out. Draft copies may survive with the original letter to which it was a reply in the appropriate original correspondence series.
