Foreign subjects did not need to naturalize in order to reside or work in Britain or the colonies. Citizenship conferred specific rights, subject to certain restrictions, which varied over time. These rights included the right to vote, inherit or bequeath property, serve in a public office, protection by the British government in foreign countries, and on occasion exemption from some taxes.
