West Indians are a migratory people and have migrated to other countries in search of education, employment and settlement. British West Indians not only moved to other British colonies but to foreign countries and colonies and most American countries have small numbers of British West Indians residing and working there. Records of British West Indians will be found among the usual sources local family historians need to use such as naturalisation records, immigration returns, probate records, censuses and life cycle records.
Very little information will be found in the UK, although some information may be found for immigrants to other British colonies and commonwealth countries in the records of the Colonial Office. The Foreign Office was responsible for looking after British interests and British subjects in foreign countries. Surviving records of these departments are with the National Archives.
