* Other Migrants

Many other groups of migrants have settled in the West Indies and these include:

  • German Palantines who settled in Jamaica in the 18th century
  • Chinese labourers who settled mainly in Guyana, Trinidad and Jamaica in the 19th century
  • Syrian and Lebanese refugees who settled in Jamaica and many other islands in the late 19th and early 20th centuries
  • Greek sponge divers who settled in the Bahamas in the late 19th and early 20th centuries
  • Sephardic Jews who escaped persecution in Spain and Portugal in the 16th and 17th centuries settled in Brazil and most Caribbean countries
The records of these migrants may occasionally be found in the records of the Colonial Office but most are to be found among the records of the general population in the archives and other repositories in the West Indies.
