* Indian Students

Indian students came to Britain to study subjects such as law and medicine, technical and research studies. The majority of them attended Oxford, Cambridge and Edinburgh universities. Admission registers of these universities are a valuable source for genealogists.

  • For Cambridge, extensive details are provided in the ten volumes of J and J A Venn's Alumni Cantabrigienses, Cambridge University Press 1922-54.
  • Oxford students are listed in the eight volumes of Joseph Foster's Alumni Oxonienses by James Parker & Co., 1888-91
In 1926, the total number of full-time students in the universities of England and Wales were 800, in Scotland 248, in Ireland 22. In addition, 390 Indian students were at the various Inns of Court. (Details are available from the National Archives reference (PRO) ED24/1994.)
